Artefacts - Lock Plate
Lock Plate
This Roman brass key lock plate was found in a room adjacent to where a bronze and iron key was uncovered during the 1881 excavations. Several other pieces of lock mechanisms were found nearby, suggesting that this area of the building (the north range of the villa complex) required a higher-than-normal level of security, presumably to protect valuables. Although heavily corroded, X-rays of the key show that the teeth that engage with the lock mechanism are preserved beneath the corrosion.

Painted Wall Plaster
The interiors of Roman buildings were often decorated using bold colours and designs. Wall paintings or frescoes were commonly seen in public buildings, private homes, temples, tombs and even military structures across the Roman world. Designs could range from the very simple to extremely realistic or elaborate, and would sometimes cover all the walls and ceilings. Images included portraits, gods/goddesses, mythological creatures, architecture, flora/fauna and even entire landscapes. Artefacts - Handprint Tile
Handprint Tile
This large floor tile is of a type called a sesquipedalis and was commonly used on floors which were supported by tile columns, often found with a hypocaust (underfloor heating). The surface shown here has been decoratively scored with a 13-point comb, applied to help the tile fix onto the mortar. In this case, the tile maker has also left a handprint in the centre as a kind of signature. The clay used to make these tiles is often fine enough to preserve the fingerprints of the individual.

Gift Aid

If you are a UK taxpayer, an additional way to support the museum is by using Gift Aid.

We are able to claim Gift Aid on pay once, visit all year tickets. When you book online or buy your ticket at the museum, we will ask you if you are a UK taxpayer and if you are happy for us to claim Gift Aid on your ticket purchase. As a registered charity, this means we can claim an additional 25p on every £1 which makes a real difference to Brading Roman Villa Trust’s work to continue to protect and conserve the site for the future. All you need to do is give your permission when you buy your ticket. So, if you purchase a family ticket and select Gift Aid, we can claim £9.75 from the government.

By allowing us to claim Gift Aid, you are declaring that you are a UK taxpayer and understand that if you pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in that tax year it is your responsibility to pay any difference. If you pay Income Tax at the higher or additional rate and want to receive the additional tax relief due to you, you must include all your Gift Aid donations on your Self-Assessment tax return or ask HMRC to adjust your tax code.
